MIYAJIMA KOGEI

MIYAJIMA KOGEI has been crafting wooden tools in Miyajima, Hiroshima, for over 130 years. Inheriting the legacy of the "Miyajima Shamoji"—a ladle believed to "scoop up happiness"—this workshop has long been a familiar and cherished presence for the local community.

While honoring their heritage of meticulous handwork, they create reliable tools that harmonize with modern life, designed to be used and loved for years to come.

Standard Ladle

As its name suggests, this piece is truly the "best of both worlds"—combining the functions of a ladle and a serving scoop. Its distinctive, slightly shallow surface allows it to serve soups, flip ingredients, or mix everything together with ease.

By integrating the movements of scooping, flipping, and mixing into a single tool, it brings a seamless flow to my cooking. It is a versatile and dependable partner in any kitchen.

The Joy of Aging: Mountain Cherry Wood

The wood used is mountain cherry (Yamazakura) grown in northern Hiroshima. Its ideal balance of hardness and elasticity makes it resistant to warping—a perfect material for a tool meant to last a lifetime.

Over time, mountain cherry develops a reddish hue and a calm, deep patina. It is a wooden tool that matures with every touch in my daily kitchen routine, allowing me to enjoy its evolving character.

A Soft and Silky Texture

The true allure of MIYAJIMA KOGEI is, above all, its "smoothness". This unforgettable touch is born from the artisan’s dedication to repeated carving and polishing.

By moving through many grits of sandpaper, from coarse to fine, the wood achieves a moist, gentle luster that is hard to believe for an unpainted finish. It is a texture that rests naturally and comfortably in the palm.

The masterful skill behind that smooth texture. I witnessed the production process with my own eyes.

Premium Right-Angle Ladle

For making stews or hearty soups, I also highly recommend the "Premium Right-Angle Ladle." The handle is slightly bent, allowing it to hook perfectly onto the rim of the pot—a small but thoughtful detail that solves the common dilemma of where to place your ladle while cooking.

These wooden tools from MIYAJIMA KOGEI each have their own shape and purpose, yet they all quietly support my daily life in the kitchen. I hope you find your own favorite to accompany your culinary journey.

Notes

Natural Variation: Since each piece is crafted from natural wood, the grain and color are entirely unique.
You may find occasional knots, which I invite you to enjoy as part of the organic charm of the material.

Handmade Quality:
As these are finished by the skilled hands of artisans at MIYAJIMA KOGEI, there may be slight variations in size and shape. I see these subtle differences as a testament to their handmade origin.

Handling Precautions

For Oily Dishes: When cooking oily food, I find it helpful to apply a thin layer of cooking oil beforehand. This protects the wood and makes daily care even simpler (no need to pre-wet with water in this case).

The Beauty of Aging: As an unpainted piece, the wood will naturally change color or develop oil marks over time. I enjoy this process as the tool "matures" with use; cherry wood in particular deepens into a rich, beautiful red.

Cleaning & Drying: After use, please wash gently with a sponge and avoid soaking in water for long periods. To prevent scratches, I avoid using metal scrubbers. Simply wipe away any moisture with a cloth and let it air dry in a well-ventilated spot.

Important Notes: Please avoid using a dishwasher or dryer. Rapid drying in these environments can cause the wood to warp or crack.
