MIYAJIMA KOGEI
MIYAJIMA KOGEI has been crafting wooden tools in Miyajima, Hiroshima, for over 130 years. Inheriting the legacy of the "Miyajima Shamoji"—a ladle believed to "scoop up happiness"—this workshop has long been a familiar and cherished presence for the local community.
While honoring their heritage of meticulous handwork, they create reliable tools that harmonize with modern life, designed to be used and loved for years to come.
Round Handle Angled Ladle
The "Round Handle Angled Ladle" is a staple for my daily table. In Miyajima, it is common to refer to rice paddles as "shakushi" (ladles), a tradition stemming from the famous Miyajima Shamoji. This angled version is specifically designed to help you mix rice with a "cutting" motion, allowing the force of your hand to reach each grain effortlessly. Its symmetrical handle ensures it is comfortable for anyone to use, regardless of their dominant hand.
The Joy of Aging: Mountain Cherry Wood
The wood used is mountain cherry (Yamazakura) grown in northern Hiroshima. Its ideal balance of hardness and elasticity makes it resistant to warping—a perfect material for a tool meant to last a lifetime.
Over time, mountain cherry develops a reddish hue and a calm, deep patina. I love watching its character grow and evolve with every touch in my daily kitchen routine.
A Soft and Silky Texture
The true allure of MIYAJIMA KOGEI is, above all, its "smoothness". This unforgettable touch is born from the artisan’s dedication to repeated carving and polishing.
By moving through many grits of sandpaper, from coarse to fine, the wood achieves a moist, gentle luster that is hard to believe for an unpainted finish. It is a texture that rests naturally and comfortably in the palm.

Visiting the Birthplace of Miyajima Ladles
The masterful skill behind that smooth texture. I witnessed the production process with my own eyes.
Companion Piece: Round Handle Round Ladle
The "Round Handle Round Ladle" from the same series is characterized by its perfectly circular head that gently cradles fluffy rice. Its symmetrical design makes it easy for anyone to handle, serving as a quiet, reliable partner for your daily meals.

Each wooden tool from MIYAJIMA KOGEI has its own shape and purpose, yet they all quietly support my life in the kitchen. I hope you find your own favorite to accompany your culinary journey.
