Collection: MIYAJIMA KOGEI SEISAKUSHO

Maker / MIYAJIMA KOGEI   Material / Mountain Cherry (Yamazakura)   Region / Miyajima, Hatsukaichi, Hiroshima

MIYAJIMA KOGEI has been crafting wooden tools that harmonize with daily life in Miyajima, Hiroshima, for over 130 years. Inheriting the heritage of the "Miyajima Shamoji"—believed to "scoop up happiness"—this workshop has long been a familiar and cherished presence for the local community.

The wood used is mountain cherry (Yamazakura), grown in northern Hiroshima. It is a beautiful wood—hard yet resilient—that deepens into a rich, soulful reddish hue with every use. Artisans read the grain of a single board to sketch the form, then carve and polish it repeatedly. I find that this meticulous process is what creates that unforgettable, silky texture the moment it touches your hand.
