MIYAJIMA KOGEI
MIYAJIMA KOGEI has been crafting wooden tools in Miyajima, Hiroshima, for over 130 years. Carrying on the heritage of the "Miyajima Shamoji"—believed to "scoop up happiness"—this workshop has long been a cherished part of local life.
While upholding their tradition of meticulous handwork, they utilize time-honored woodworking techniques to create reliable tools that harmonize beautifully with modern life.
Sushi Spatula
I find this small "Sushi Spatula" indispensable for hand-rolled sushi days. It is the perfect size for scooping and spreading just the right amount of vinegared rice onto seaweed. Small and light, it is a wonderful addition to any hand-roll party and is easy for children to hold as well.
The Joy of Aging: Mountain Cherry Wood
The wood used is mountain cherry, grown in northern Hiroshima. Known for its ideal balance of hardness and elasticity, it resists warping and is the perfect material for a tool meant to last a lifetime.
Over time, mountain cherry develops a reddish glow and a sophisticated, deep patina. It is a companion that matures with every touch in my kitchen, allowing me to enjoy its evolving character day by day.
A Soft and Silky Texture
The hallmark of MIYAJIMA KOGEI is undoubtedly its exceptional smoothness. This unforgettable touch is the result of years of dedicated craftsmanship, where artisans repeatedly carve and polish each piece with care.
During the polishing process, the artisans move meticulously through various grits of sandpaper. The resulting surface possesses a soft, moist-looking luster that seems impossible for unpainted wood, resting naturally and comfortably in the palm.

The masterful skill behind that smooth texture. I witnessed the production process with my own eyes.
Miso Spatula
This spatula makes the movement of scooping and dissolving miso feel effortless—a reliable partner for my daily miso soup ritual.
These small spatulas gently support those "little movements" in the kitchen. Scooping, dissolving, or spreading... when these tasks are handled with such lightness, daily cooking becomes just a bit more joyful.

Each of these wooden tools from MIYAJIMA KOGEI has its own shape and purpose, yet they all quietly support my life in the kitchen. I hope you find your own favorite piece to accompany your daily rituals.
