Nanpu Kogei
Lately, it has gotten so warm that it almost feels hot. The trees are adorned in soft green, and the wind feels light as if it has shed the heaviness of winter.
When the season of fresh greenery arrives, you want to breathe in the outdoor air.
Recently, enticed by the pleasant sunshine, I went for a picnic. Spending a relaxing time in the spring sunlight is a moment when you can truly feel the changing of the seasons. Since it's a special time, I carefully prepared by packing bread, fruits, some sweets, and cold drinks. At such times, I instinctively reach for a basket from Nanpu Kogei.
Large Basket with Lid
Nanpu Kogei is a comprehensive bamboo trading company founded in 1979 in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. In Beppu, known as a major production area for bamboo crafts, they have consistently handled everything from material procurement to manufacturing and sales in-house.
The system that also manages forests and supplies materials to artisans is a rare initiative not often seen in other production areas. I realized that such a consistent system creates trust in high-quality products and leads to a sense of security, so I decided to welcome Nanpu Kogei's products into my home.
Furthermore, Nanpu Kogei's products are not merely bamboo crafts; they also have an aspect of "creative bamboo art." The way modern design and traditional techniques are wonderfully integrated by the hands of artisans, while focusing on the sustainable use of bamboo, is particularly impressive as a reason to cherish them for a long time.
Currently, while inheriting the craftsmanship and aesthetic sense rooted in the region, they have relocated their base to Hiji Town, Oita Prefecture, surrounded by rich nature and abundant marine resources, and are manufacturing products using high-quality bamboo.

The Large Basket with Lid has a rustic, somewhat nostalgic appearance that can only come from such local culture and climate. It also possesses an elegance unique to handicrafts that have been alive in that land for a long time.
I was captivated by its modest and quiet presence, which makes use of the natural expression of bamboo itself.
Upon closer inspection, thin and thick bamboo strips are skillfully combined, highlighting the beauty of the intricate handwork. From the delicately arranged weaving patterns, the carefulness and warmth unique to the artisan's handwork are clearly conveyed.
Small Picnic Basket
The Small Picnic Basket, with its subtle luster and gentle texture unique to bamboo, is a charming item.
When you touch the bamboo texture, where shiny and smooth parts blend with natural roughness, it feels as if you are holding nature itself in your hands. It is an exquisite piece that allows you to gently feel the breath of the material in your daily life.
Thanks to its effortless lightness, which makes it easy to use, it has recently seen more use on afternoons spent relaxing in the park or on casual trips to the neighborhood supermarket.
Supple, Strong, and Beautiful
Bamboo is known as a sustainable eco-friendly material that grows surprisingly fast. While it is lightweight and easy to maintain, each piece has its own individuality and elasticity, so high skill and patience are required for processing.
Bamboo products carefully finished in this way are durable and can be used for a long time, and the beauty that deepens into an amber color with use is one of the joys of owning them. Supple and strong, and gaining more character with time, bamboo combines practicality and design, and I feel that it is more than just a "tool" but leads to a heartwarming experience.
Small Storage that Can Be Used Anywhere
This basket is slightly smaller than the lidded basket and can store anything.
It is useful not only for outdoor activities like picnics but also indoors for storing fabrics as an interior item, making it versatile in various situations.
It has handles, making it easy to carry. Since it can be moved quickly while items are stored inside, cleaning and tidying up are smooth.

It's perfect for everyday use, but also for entertaining on special occasions. Using it as a "tea set" for a casual tea time when welcoming guests further enhances the functionality and beauty of the basket.
The bamboo basket with its moderate height is more stable than a tray, and I appreciate that I can safely carry teapots and teacups.
Onigiri Holder
The Onigiri Holder, which I took with me on the picnic, was a reliable item that quietly demonstrated its power even outdoors.
Bamboo has natural breathability and is not prone to stuffiness, which is a significant feature that helps keep foods like onigiri (rice balls) and nimono (stewed dishes) delicious. Especially for picnics where humidity tends to accumulate, its excellent breathability is very helpful, as it appropriately releases excess moisture from the rice, preventing it from getting steamy, sticky, or flattened. It's also a pleasant bonus that the nori (seaweed) doesn't get soggy easily, allowing you to enjoy a comfortable texture.
Furthermore, bamboo is said to have natural antibacterial properties, providing a sense of security on warm days. The onigiri holder's neat construction with a lid that closes securely also reflects the meticulous craftsmanship of Japanese artisans.

This onigiri holder also quietly blends in as an interior item indoors. Stationery, glasses, small accessories, and makeup tools you want to keep within reach. The free and beautiful shape of the bamboo, which does not limit its use, adds a soft impression to your daily life.
Enjoying Life with Bamboo, Both at Home and Outdoors
Because it's a natural material, bamboo harmonizes beautifully with time spent in nature, like a picnic. Under the dappled sunlight, the basket placed on the grass looks like a part of nature, so beautiful that you can't help but gaze at it.
While usually using it at home, just taking the basket out gives you a feeling of a small trip. It's perfect for those moments when you want to relax.
In this breezy season, why not go out into the greenery with a Nanpu Kogei basket?
