Amenoie's Special Lacquer Bowl, Crafted by Tsuchinao Shikki
Tsuchinao Shikki, with its workshop nestled in the mountains of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture, boasts a showroom where countless lacquerware pieces are meticulously arranged, filling every available space. This breathtaking display eloquently narrates the rich history of Tsuchinao Shikki's craftsmanship.
"I want to share the richness of this craft with as many people as possible."
Driven by this strong desire, we decided to commission Amenoie's bowls from them.
A reliable lidded bowl for rice bowls and noodles.
This is a bowl with a lid, crafted in the same shape and size as a Zoni bowl.
The lid helps retain heat, making it ideal for warm dishes like rice bowls and noodles, and adds a touch of elegance suitable for entertaining guests.
The shape is the traditional "Hasori," with its gently flared rim that has been cherished for generations.
The slightly outward-curving rim creates a clean impression,
and the thin edge enhances the light feel when it touches your lips.
The texture of the lacquer determines "everyday specialness"
In the world of lacquer, there are methods that involve layering countless coats until the wood grain is completely obscured, and also techniques that subtly preserve the texture of the wood, allowing even the material's "breathing" to be felt.
For this project, we asked Tsuchinao-san for numerous prototypes, aiming for an elegant finish on the exterior where the wood grain would subtly show through.
Conversely, the interior is coated slightly thicker, just enough to prevent the wood grain from showing, to ensure that the food served in it looks beautiful.
By varying the application of the same color, a depth of expression is created within a single vessel.
Black Lacquer and Kodai Shu
"Black Lacquer" with deep shadows
"Kodai Shu," nostalgic and adding warmth to the dining table
These two colors are available.
These traditional colors are timeless and possess an appealing, calm matte texture.
They are not only suitable for special occasions like New Year's or celebrations but also easily incorporated into daily meals. You can also enjoy the rich aging process as the lacquer develops a deeper luster with use.
These bowls make delightful gifts for wedding celebrations or anniversaries for your loved ones.
"Lacquerware that accompanies modern living"
Classic lacquerware might sometimes be associated with special occasions.
Many people might have such an image.
However, Tsuchinao Shikki's bowls possess a softness that seamlessly blends into daily dining, while simultaneously adding a "touch of everyday specialness" that might inspire you to straighten your posture a little.
The unmistakable elegance conveyed the moment you hold it.
This, we believe, is not only due to the allure of the lacquer material but also the inherent power of the craft itself, carefully passed down through generations.
Lacquerware is a vessel whose luster deepens and expression slowly evolves with use.
We hope you enjoy this process of subtle transformation as it accompanies your life.
