Amenoie's Special Lacquer Bowl, Made with Tsunchoku Shikki
Tsunchoku Shikki's workshop is nestled in the mountains of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture.
Their showroom was overflowing with countless lacquerware pieces. The overwhelming sight conveyed the profound history of Tsunchoku Shikki's lacquerware craftsmanship.
"I want to share the richness of this craft with many people."
With this strong desire, we decided to commission Tsunchoku Shikki to create Amenoie's bowls.
A reliable lidded bowl for both donburi and noodles.
This is a bowl with a lid, identical in shape and size to a traditional Zoni bowl.
The lid helps retain heat, making it ideal for warm dishes like donburi and noodles, and adds an elegant touch suitable for entertaining guests.
The shape is the traditional "Hasori" (flared rim), which has been beloved for centuries.
The gently outward-curving rim creates a sleek impression,
and the thinly crafted edge enhances the light feel when it touches your lips.
The texture of the lacquer determines the "everyday specialness"
In the world of lacquer, there are methods where lacquer is applied in multiple layers until the wood grain is completely obscured, and also methods where the natural texture of the wood is subtly retained, allowing you to feel the very "breath" of the material.
For this project, we asked Tsunchoku Shikki to create many prototypes to achieve an elegant finish on the outside, where the wood grain is just faintly visible.
On the other hand, the inside is coated slightly thicker, just enough to prevent the wood grain from showing through, to beautifully highlight the food served.
By varying the application of the same color, a profound expression is created within a single vessel.
Black Lacquer and Kodaishu (Ancient Vermilion)
"Black lacquer" with deep shadows
"Kodaishu" (Ancient Vermilion), which is somewhat nostalgic and adds warmth to the dining table
are available in two colors.
These traditional colors are timeless, and their subdued matte texture is appealing.
They are not only suitable for special occasions like New Year's or celebrations but also easy to incorporate into daily meals. You can also enjoy the rich aging process as the lacquer develops a deeper luster with use.
These bowls also make delightful gifts for wedding celebrations or anniversaries for your loved ones.
"Lacquerware that accompanies modern living"
Classic lacquerware might evoke an image of being reserved for special occasions.
Many people might have such an impression.
However, Tsunchoku Shikki's bowls have a gentleness that seamlessly blends into daily meals, while also adding a touch of "everyday specialness" that makes you want to straighten your posture a little.
The undeniable quality conveyed the moment you hold it.
That is not only the charm of lacquer as a material but also the power of the craft itself, carefully passed down through generations over a long period.
Lacquerware is a vessel whose luster deepens with use, gradually evolving its expression.
We hope you enjoy this process of subtle change that unfolds slowly alongside your life.
