Ame no Ie's Special Lacquer Bowl, Crafted by Tsuchinao Shikki
Tsuchinao Shikki's studio is nestled in the mountains of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture.
In their showroom,
countless lacquerware pieces, including maki-e bowls, are displayed in every corner. The overwhelming sight powerfully conveys the history of Tsuchinao Shikki's lacquerware craftsmanship.
"We want to share the richness of this craft with many people."
With this strong desire, we decided to have Tsuchinao Shikki create Ame no Ie's bowls.
This single bowl is perfect for both Ozoni and everyday soups.
It truly looks perfect when serving New Year's ozoni.
Slightly larger than a standard soup bowl, it can hold plenty of ingredients while maintaining an elegant appearance.
As the name suggests, it's a bowl for ozoni, but that's not its only purpose.
It's also ideal for tonjiru (pork miso soup), kenchinjiru (vegetable soup), donburi dishes, and noodles, making it a versatile bowl that you'll naturally reach for in your daily life.
Its shape is the traditional hasori.
The rim, gently flaring outwards, is clean and elegant,
and its thin construction provides a light feel to the lips.
The texture of the lacquer creates "everyday specialness"
In the world of lacquer, there are methods of applying many layers until the wood grain is no longer visible, and there are also methods that subtly retain the expression of the wood grain, allowing you to feel the very breath of the material.
For this bowl, we asked Tsuchinao-san for multiple prototypes, seeking an elegant finish where the wood grain subtly shows through on the outside.
On the other hand, the inside is coated slightly thicker, just enough so the wood grain doesn't show through, to beautifully showcase the food served in it.
By varying the thickness of the coating, even with the same color, a deep, nuanced expression is created within a single piece of tableware.
Black Lacquer and Kodai Shu (Ancient Vermillion)
"Black Lacquer" with deep shading
"Kodai Shu" (Ancient Vermillion), which evokes a sense of nostalgia and adds warmth to the dining table
are available in two colors.
These traditional colors are not influenced by trends, and their calm, matte texture is appealing.
They are easy to incorporate into daily dining, as well as for special occasions such as New Year's or celebrations, and you can enjoy the rich aging process as the lacquer develops its luster with use.
This bowl also makes a delightful gift for a loved one's wedding or anniversary.
As "lacquerware that accompanies modern life"
Classic lacquerware might be seen as something for special occasions.
Many people might hold such an image.
However, Tsuchinao Shikki's bowls possess a softness that seamlessly blends into daily dining, while simultaneously adding a "sense of everyday specialness" that makes you want to straighten your posture a little.
The unmistakable quality conveyed the moment you hold it.
This, I feel, is not only due to the charm of lacquer as a material but also the inherent power of a craft carefully handed down over a long time.
Lacquerware is a vessel whose luster develops and whose expression deepens little by little with use.
We hope you will enjoy the process of its gradual change as it accompanies your life.
