Ame no Ie's Special Lacquer Bowl, Made with Tsuchinao Shikki
Tsuchinao Shikki has a workshop nestled in the mountains of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture.
Their showroom is filled with countless lacquerware items, including makie bowls.
The overwhelming sight conveys the long history of Tsuchinao Shikki's lacquerware craftsmanship.
"We want to share the richness of this craft with many people."
With this strong desire, we decided to commission Ame no Ie's bowls.
A lacquer bowl for everyday use.
The soft touch unique to lacquerware,
The way it gently transmits heat,
The gentle feel when it touches your lips.
Just by switching to a lacquer bowl, your usual soup will feel much more refined.
We chose the "hasori" shape, which has been loved for generations.
It has a gentle curve that isn't too pronounced, and a rim that gently flares outwards.
The rim is thin and pleasant to the touch, with a sleek and elegant appearance.
For miso soup, clear soup, or tonjiru.
It's a bowl that makes your everyday meal feel a little more luxurious.
The texture of the lacquer determines the "everyday specialness."
In the world of lacquerware, there are methods of applying many layers until the wood grain is completely hidden, and also methods that subtly preserve the texture of the wood, allowing you to feel the material's very breath.
For this project, we repeatedly asked Tsuchinao-san to create prototypes, seeking an elegant finish for the exterior where the wood grain would subtly show through.
On the other hand, the interior was coated with a slightly thicker layer, just enough to prevent the wood grain from showing through, to beautifully highlight the food served in it.
By varying the application of the same color, a profound expression with depth is created within a single piece of tableware.
Black Lacquer and Kodai Shu (Ancient Vermilion)
"Black Lacquer" with deep shadows
"Kodai Shu" (Ancient Vermilion), somewhat nostalgic, adding warmth to the dining table
We offer two colors.
These are traditional colors that are not influenced by trends, with an appealing calm, matte texture.
They are easy to incorporate into daily meals, as well as for special occasions such as year-end and New Year holidays or celebrations, and you can enjoy the rich aging of the lacquer as you use it.
These bowls make a delightful gift for a loved one's wedding or anniversary.

As "lacquerware that fits into future lifestyles"
Classic lacquerware might be perceived as something for special occasions.
Many people might have that image.
However, Tsuchinao Shikki's bowls have a softness that seamlessly blends into daily dining, and at the same time, they add a "touch of everyday specialness" that makes you want to straighten your posture a little.
The undeniable quality conveyed the moment you hold it.
I feel that this is not only due to the appeal of lacquer as a material but also the power of the craft itself, carefully passed down through generations over a long time.
Lacquerware is a vessel that develops a luster and gradually deepens its expression with use.
We hope you enjoy the process of its slow change as it accompanies your life.
