Amenoie's Special Lacquer Bowls Made with Tsuchinao Shikki
Tsuchinao Shikki, with a workshop nestled in the mountains of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture.
Their showroom is packed with countless lacquerware items, including maki-e bowls. The breathtaking sight conveys the rich history of Tsuchinao Shikki's lacquerware production.
"We want to deliver the richness of this craft to many people."
With that strong desire, we decided to have Tsuchinao Shikki create bowls for Amenoie.
For Ozoni and everyday soups, all in one bowl.
Ozoni bowls are a size larger than regular soup bowls, providing ample space for soups with many ingredients.
As the name suggests, they are for ozoni, but their use is not limited to that.
They are also recommended for tonjiru (pork miso soup), kenchinjiru (vegetable soup), rice bowls, and noodles, making them a versatile and easy-to-use item that you'll naturally reach for at your daily table.
The shape is "hasori" (flared rim), a beloved traditional form.
The gently flaring rim is sleek and elegant,
and the thin rim offers a pleasant mouthfeel.
The texture of the lacquer creates "everyday specialness."
In the world of lacquer, there are methods of applying many layers until the wood grain is completely hidden, and also methods that subtly retain the expression of the wood grain, allowing you to feel the very breath of the material.
This time, for the exterior, we requested Tsuchinao to make many prototypes to achieve an elegant finish where the wood grain subtly shows through.
On the other hand, the interior is coated slightly thicker, to the extent that the wood grain doesn't show through, to beautifully showcase the food served in it.
By varying the thickness of the lacquer, even with the same color, a profound expression is created within a single vessel.
Black Lacquer and Ancient Vermilion
We offer two colors:
"Black Lacquer" with deep shadows, and "Ancient Vermilion," which evokes a sense of nostalgia and adds warmth to the dining table.
These traditional colors are not affected by trends, and their calm, matte texture is attractive.
They are easy to incorporate into daily meals, as well as for special occasions such as year-end and New Year holidays or celebrations. You can also enjoy the rich aging process as the lacquer develops over time with use.
These bowls are also a wonderful gift for weddings or anniversaries for your loved ones.
As "lacquerware that accompanies daily life."
Classic lacquerware might sometimes be perceived as something reserved for special occasions.
Many people might have that image.
However, Tsuchinao Shikki's bowls have a gentleness that seamlessly blends into daily dining tables, while also adding a touch of "everyday specialness" that makes you want to straighten your posture a little.
The unmistakable quality conveyed the moment you hold it.
This, I believe, is not only due to the allure of lacquer as a material but also the power of the craft itself, carefully passed down through a long history.
Lacquerware is a vessel whose luster deepens and expression gradually evolves with use.
We hope you enjoy the process of it slowly changing alongside your life.
