Yamagen Toen x Amenoiye "marais"“marais” has a moist feel reminiscent of a wetland, and an elegance that evokes the antique charm of Europe.
Its natural, delicate hue, as if the sky, blue and cloudy, is reflected in a puddle, creates a calming atmosphere.
The smooth texture makes food shine even brighter, and the soft colors bring a sense of comfort.
My encounter with "marais" happened when I visited Yamagen Toen, a pottery studio in Tokoname City, Aichi Prefecture.
With the concept of "renewing tradition," they uphold the spirit of potters who have responded to the demands of the times, developing and manufacturing Tokoname ware that suits modern life.
When I requested them to produce heat-resistant tableware, they readily agreed, providing two shapes—oval and octagonal plates—in two sizes—large serving plates and small plates—and in two colors—white and blue.

marais Serving plate
The large plate offers greater freedom in plating. Even when used for a one-plate meal, the ample empty space on the plate gives the dining table a refined atmosphere.
For me, being busy, the ease of tidying up compared to separating food into smaller dishes is a perfect match.

The oval shape is versatile for any dish and its rounded form creates a gentle ambiance.
The moist white plate enhances any cuisine. Not just for main dishes, but also for carpaccio with seasonal fish, omelets, hamburgers, or salads brimming with greens and fruits.
With a slight incline on the inner rim, you can serve dishes with olive oil or a bit of sauce without worry.
