The Art of Hand-weaving: MIYAMOTO KOGEI, Hirosaki, AomoriFounded in 1949, MIYAMOTO KOGEI is a traditional craft workshop nestled in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. They work with akebi vine, a material celebrated for being both remarkably supple and exceptionally durable.
While it begins as a light, natural brown, the vine gradually deepens into a rich, lustrous amber as it breathes and absorbs the oils from your hands over time. Resilient, water-resistant, and retaining its shape perfectly, this material truly embodies the concept of a "growing tool"—an object that matures alongside its owner.
At MIYAMOTO KOGEI, a single artisan handles every step of the process, from sorting the raw materials to the final weaving.
This creates a distinct character and strength that mass production could never replicate.
Even with the same weaving pattern, every basket is a one-of-a-kind piece, shaped by the unique personality of each vine and the subtle touch of the artisan’s hands.
The more you use it, the more these nuances become a flavor that is uniquely yours.
I felt a deep sense of affection and a special connection to this work—a completion and warmth that can only be born from the dedicated "solitary work" of a true master.
WastebasketWastebaskets are often items we tend to hide away, but this Akebi wastebasket possesses a beauty that makes you want to keep it on display.
It has a warmth and a gentle atmosphere that plastic alternatives simply cannot replicate. Practicality is also woven into its design—much like a traditional teapot trivet, the open weave provides excellent ventilation, preventing moisture buildup and suppressing odors or mold.
By discreetly placing a standard liner bag inside, you can maintain its functionality while preserving its aesthetic. It acts as a charming, understated supporting character that refines the atmosphere of any room. It is precisely because it is an item used so casually every day that I want to choose something crafted with such care.

[Product Characteristics]
This piece is handcrafted using natural Akebi vine. As it is a product of nature, please appreciate the following characteristics:
▪️ Individual Differences
Due to the handcrafted process and the use of natural materials, each piece has its own unique size and shape.
▪️ Material Texture
As a natural characteristic of Akebi vine, you may notice variations in color, peeling, or small natural marks and cracks. These do not affect the durability or function of the basket; rather, they are part of its rustic charm.
▪️ Color Representation
Please note that the actual colors of the product may vary slightly depending on your monitor settings or the lighting environment in which it is viewed.
[Care & Storage]
▪️ Daily Care
For routine maintenance, gently remove dust from the weave using a small broom or a soft brush, following the direction of the vines.
▪️ Handling Moisture
If the basket becomes wet, ensure it is dried completely in a well-ventilated, shaded area before storing. Please note that leaving the material damp may cause mold or deformation.
▪️ Storage
To prevent fading and deterioration, avoid storing the piece in direct sunlight or in environments with high temperature and humidity.
We hope you will enjoy the unique texture of this natural material and the beautiful patina that develops over the years, making it a cherished companion for a long time to come.
