Though made of clay, it somehow resembles stone.

The first time I saw Sota Obara’s work, I was captivated by its quiet presence.

A faint blue seeping through light gray.
Subtle traces left by charcoal.
Delicate crackles spreading.

Each piece, with its unique expression, possesses a depth as if painted by nature.

This beauty is brought forth by a process called "carbonization firing."

After bisque firing and main firing, the vessels are placed in a sagger with rice husks, and a third firing is conducted. This process, influenced by flame and ash, creates a unique landscape on each piece.

"This is something I truly don't know until I open the kiln," he says.

Obara continues to search for his unique expression, experimenting little by little with clay, glaze, and firing methods.

His craftsmanship involves continuous trial and error to approach his vision, ultimately entrusting the final outcome to nature.

It is through the interplay of human hands and nature that Obara's unique expressions are born.
